Community Spirit
One of the most difficult things about living in Washington is choosing among the myriad clubs and volunteer organizations. You could end up spending every waking moment doing something around here. There are book clubs and bridge clubs, a gardening group, animal rescue societies, a hiking club, soccer and baseball leagues, homeless food programs - even an equestrian team.
A couple of months ago the art teacher at Peabody, one of our Capitol Hill public kindergartens, called saying, "Jackie, we're having a little art show and contest. Would you be a judge and donate a prize?" I couldn't say no, ended up picking the pictures I didn't think anyone else would select and gave 11 prizes. The rewards were substantial: The kids wrote me the cutest thank you notes, "Mrs. Von Schlegel, we love you!"
Besides chipping in for almost every neighborhood school event and sports team, I'm a supporter of Alley Cat Allies, an organization that cares for feral cats and finds them good homes, and Pets DC, which helps people with AIDS who can no longer keep their dogs and cats.
Then there's my soccer team, the Capitol Lounge Rovers, which I co-sponsor along with a local restaurant, the Capitol Lounge. I call them "my boys," though they're in their 20's and 30's. (That's them above. Aren't they adorable?).
I also help sponsor a young girls softball team, The Washington Senators. They are doing great and I'm soo proud....go get 'em girls!! (anyone interested in helping either team...donations are always welcome-email us for details).
I'm also a member of several business and professional associations, including CHAMPS, the local Chamber of Commerce, and the Capitol Hill Brokers Council.
